GAME DEVELOPER - LEVEL DESIGN
NIGHT OF THE NOCTURNE
ROLE
Lead Designer
DESCRIPTION
Night of the Nocturn is a 3D flying platformer where you play as a moth escaping a shelving unit. Use your navigation skills to weave through the webs, follow the light bulbs, and find your way to freedom.
This was made through my second year studying Game Development: Design within a team of multidisciplined game developers. My roll in this game was primarily lead designer, although I helped out with programming, UI functionality and art integration.

LEVEL DESIGN
The idea of the level being the inside of a cupboard system was due to the issue of having a character controller that can fly, yet still wanting a linear level where the players direction is controlled and movement is limited.
The flow of the level is a zigzag pattern up the cupboard system, where the player can reach the next level by flying through cracks in the shelves at each end.
It starts off simple to allow the player to become accustomed to the controls and game feel. the first two layers of shelves showcase this, where no fail state can occur unless the player loses all stamina.
The next layer introduces the webs, where if the player touches them, they become stuck and fail.
The flow is then broken up with a tunnel in the wall behind the shelving unit the player needs to fly through. In this tunnel, the player can get electrocuted by wires sticking out the wall.
Finally, the top level is a test of skill, where accurate flying is needed to avoid all webs and make it to the vent to escape.
